Peaky Blinders Season 5 Watched 7 - 9 September, 26 September

The thing I like best about Peaky Blinders is the amazing cast and the even more amazing performances. It wasn't until episode three that I realised that it was Sam Claflin playing Oswald Mosley.

But, even though the cinematography and writing is pretty amazing, I guess… I don't really care about the story or the characters any more. It's really not fun to be watching them do the same dumb shit and argue in the same dumb ways. I feel like Tommy is the only one who has even a semblance of a character arc this season -- watching his slow descent into outright suicidal hallucinations was one of the few times I cared about what was actually happening, rather than the way it looked, and bringing Grace back to haunt him meant I could relive some of the things I liked most about the first two season.

Rocky - Creed Watched 1 - 8 October

I've only watched one of these previously -- Rocky Balboa -- back when it came out in 2006, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, and how good it was. I never thought to watch the rest of the movies -- even though I was interested in Creed when that came out -- until I was asking my brother and sister-in-law about some favourite movies, thinking of scribbling some art for a housewarming present.

And then I started it and couldn't stop really.

I love the general theme -- not uncommon in sports movies, in my experience -- of moral and personal victories being more important that accolades and titles. I especially liked the way the Creed movies paralleled and improved the story where Rocky IV and V fell short. Creed one have us the mentor/trainee and father/son story that IV could have had and I liked Creed II especially for humanising Drago -- father and son both -- and for making the first real compelling antagonist since Apollo Creed. I also really, really loved the relationship between Rocky and Adrian, especially the way he listens to her like -- it's not him arrogantly acting like he has to listen to his wife otherwise she's gonna nag him to death, holy shit, he listens to her every scene they have, even when he goes off to do what he feels he needs to do, you can see on his face that he knows she's right, and he never, ever belittles her opinions. I love them.

Some faves:

Rocky I -- Rocky's "going the distance" speech to Adrian

Rocky III -- Any time Rocky and Apollo share screen time tbh but also Rocky and Adrian's 'argument' on the beach

Rocky Balboa -- Rocky's speech to Robert

Creed -- Hospital training montage and the general awesomeness of Tessa Thompson and Michael B Jordan tbh

Creed II -- When Rocky tries to convince Adonis not to fight Drago -- Viktor refuses to suck up to the people who shamed his dad -- Rocky and Adonis make up -- Ivan throws in the towel and comforts his son

Oh no, that sounds like such a lovely relationship between Rocky and Adrian! And Tessa Thompson is in Creed?? I can't believe you're making boxing movies sound appealing.
