the farther away, the better

watched 13, 20 May
I have even less to say about these two episodes that the four before it. Firstly, is that I had to watch the majority of episode five at 3x speed to make it tolerable. The only part of it worth anything at all, was the one scene between Jamie and Tyrion, except for when Jamie said he didn't care about any of the people in King's Landing, which is... historically untrue? Jamie doesn't care about innocent people? Bitch, where???? None of the rest made any sense. At all. How many shots do you need of people burning? I feel like Dany has had maybe fifteen minutes of dialogue this whole season, and all of Jon's dialogue was total trash as well... They might have Tyrion holding the idiot ball, but at least he sounds more or less like himself...
The last one wasn't as bad as the previous one -- I felt like the cinematography was a little better, at least. I liked the shot of Tyrion walking past the fallen bell, and the one of Jon going to see Dany and Drogon shaking himself out of the ashes to inspect him. I feel like the ending was... okay, except for the fact that the characters were all wasted, all the storylines for the past seven seasons were wasted, and everything felt rushed and tacked on at the last minute. I might have been able to get behind it more if they had spent this season actually developing the story in that direction, instead of wasting five whole episodes on destruction and tangents. At least the Iron Throne is melted down, which is probably the only reasonable decision anyone has made all season, thanks Drogon.

I don't know if this applies to Game of Thrones, because from everything I hear the writing has just been terrible on every level, but it seems like a lot of stories lately are suffering from an attempt to deliver unguessable endings, even to the point of completely failing to set up what's going to happen. It reminds me of an amazing tweet -- which unfortunately I failed to bookmark and so can't find again -- that said something to the effect that the 95% of people who watch casually aren't going to think about it long enough to work out your clever twist no matter the clues, whereas the 5% who very well might are the same 5% who are invested enough to care about the writing quality, which means that putting the story through these pointless convolutions gains you nothing and sacrifices the good will of your most devoted fans. I really hope creators catch on to this fact soon. -_-
That's something, at least!
