Oh my goodness, I'm late to the party, but I wanted to dive in and talk VIII :D :D :D

Yeesh, 100% the game sounds tedious D: I imagine that would involve getting every Triple Triad card or something? Which like... you get to a point where you're spreading horrible rules just by visiting regions. I don't know if they changed it with any of the recent ports, but I remember you would always spread the random rule after you visit Trabia Garden and I hated it.

I'm in team "I hate the battle mechanics of VIII" but I also know a lot of people who love it. For me, my ADD brain kicks off and I need all magic to be maxed and then I need to never use magic if I want characters' junctioned stats to be awesome :\ and then all I ever did was auto attack and use items or other commands and it was never fully enjoyable for me. The base concept of it, though? I do think it's really awesome. Being able to up your stats and defenses and so forth via linking magic is really nifty. Just... didn't like how your stats will go down when you keep using the magic it's junctioned to.

I believe VII was the first one to use idle animations? Unless I'm thinking of something else. But with VIII being more realistic, the motions are a lot more easily identifiable and not just pixels flailing about. I always loved those little touches in VIII! It really says a lot about each character, like Rinoa trying to mimic the SeeD salute :D

I wasn't a big fan of how weapon upgrades worked. Getting all the items was a pain. That said, I was always amused with how getting money worked. Like just ace the SeeD tests with a guide as early as possible and then you're always getting a stupid amount for your salary for the rest of the game. I got to a point where I had so much money that I didn't know what to do with it all XD

Yeah... that's very much a Final Fantasy thing where there's less focus on the characters and more on the plot. VIII in particular felt like it had a lot of plot holes after the 1st disc. There's also random information hidden away in the menu in some area, I forget where, and if you never bother to check it, you miss out on a lot of lore bit, which... I'm not a fan of games that do that. I remember not knowing Rinoa was Julia's daughter and one of my friends told me it was an article in the menu after a certain point in the game and it's like, WHY ISN'T THIS IN THE ACTUAL NARRATIVE THOUGH????

I was forever upset that there was nothing more with Seifer and Rinoa past that one scene where they had a summer fling... sorta. At least there's fic for that!

I also had a hard time buying into Squall/Rinoa until like, halfway through disc 3. I was also a teenager and a lot of stuff didn't make sense to me then. It clicks with me more as an adult. I know a lot of people have said the progression of their relationship is weird, which it is and I blame Square for not smoothing that out, but there's definitely signs early on with them where it makes sense (to me, anyways). It does make me wonder if VIII was redone with modern graphics and everything else stayed the same if their relationship progression would make more sense. A lot of little details, like you mention, make so much sense that yeah, they love each other or what not. Not always easy to see when they have the same expression on their faces the whole game!

Also I've only played Overcooked when I'm visiting a friend's place and we have four people play it together and it's nothing but a shouting match of WHO KEEPS THROWING THE PASTA ON THE FLOOR.
